אני עוסק בהיסטוריה חברתית ובאנתרופולוגיה היסטורית. חקרתי בעבר קהילות איכרים וחברות חצר ובשנים האחרונות אני עוסק בתולדות הקבוצה החברתית המתועדת ביותר בהיסטוריה האירופית המלומדים, שיש להם מה לכתוב על כולם (והרבה מאוד על עצמם), אבל היבטים מרכזיים בהיסטוריה החברתית שלהם עדיין לא נחקרו. מחקרי התמקדו במערב אירופה, במיוחד באזורים הדוברים גרמנית, בין 1300 ל-1630.

ספרי איכרים ואדונים בימי הביניים המאוחרים (1996) עסק בתפקיד אלימות האדונים בשעתוק הסדר החברתי. הוא עוסק בשתי שאלות: כיצד מייצר פוטנציאל האלימות זיקות חברתיות, והאם כפיפותם של איכרים לאדוניהם היתה לגיטימית בעיני המוכפפים והמוכפפות עצמם? ואם האיכרים "שותקים" איך אנו יודעים בעצם אם קיבלו את האידיאולוגיה השלטת? במחקר ניסיתי לשחזר את נקודת מבטם של האיכרים מתוך שימוש הלשון מתוך האופנים החריגים לעתים שבהם השתמשו בשפה הרשמית. הדבר הוביל אותי לעיסוק בכמה סוגיות בחקר השיח ובתפקיד הלשון והדיבור במחקר היסטורי; ; בהיסטוריה של מדעי החברה כדי להבין, איזה תפקיד ממלאות מסורות תאורטיות מפורשות וחבויות בפרקטיקה המחקרית. 

יחד עם עמיתתי וחברתי, פרופ' רינה דרורי ז"ל, עסקתי לאחר מכן במחקר השוואתי של חברות חצר בין בגדאד העבאסית לצפון צרפת בימי הביניים התיכוניים. ניסינו להבין את היצירתיות התרבותית של חברות חצר וכיצד מתעצבים בהן דגמים תרבותיים במיוחד דגם ה"אהבה" החצרוני ומערכי היחסים המגדריים בתוכן. הפרויקט לא הושלם בשל מותה בלא-עת של רינה ורק חלק ממנו הגיע לכלל פירסום.

אני עוסק כעת בשאלה כיצד מתהווים אורחות חיים, באמצעות מקרה המבחן של המלומדים בצפון אירופה ובעיקר באזורים דוברי הגרמנית בין 1470 ל-1630. כיצד התעצבו משפחות חדשות לאחר שהמלומדים בצפון אירופה זנחו את מסורת הפרישות של ימי הביניים? זהו מחקר נסיוני באנתרופולוגיה ההיסטורית של יחסי משפחה ושארות, המבקש להבין את תהליכי מיגדור הידע (gendering of knowledge) בתקופת מפתח וכיצד קבוצה חברתית מעצבת דגמים עמידים של אורח חיים החל במערכות יחסים, דרך ארגון המרחב והזמן וכלה בהרגלים יומיומיים ותדמיות.

לצד פרויקט זה אני עוסק בשנים האחרונות בתהליכים קולוניאליים ובהתיישבות. העניין המחקרי המחודש בקולוניאליזם התיישבותי מאפשר לחדש את הדיאלוג בין חוקרים וחוקרות העוסקים בחברות פרה-מודרניות לבין אלה המתמקדים בחברות מודרניות. בהקשר זה אני חוקר כעת תהליכי נישול, עקירה, התיישבות והתיישבות-מחדש בישראל של שנות החמישים המוקדמות.

אני מלמד קורסים בהיסטוריה חברתית, היסטוריה של המשפחה ומיגדר; היסטוריה של אוכל ותרבות חומרית; תיאוריה ומתודולוגיה במחקר ההיסטורי; תהליכי קולוניזציה, חברות ספר ומגעים בין חברות בהיסטוריה העולמית. בכל אחד מהתחומים האלה אני מנחה תלמידות ותלמידי מחקר.
